Author
Grace Metalious (1924-1964) was an American writer who became a worldwide publishing phenomenon thanks to the novel Peyton Place (1956), with which she shocked middle-class America: set in a fictional New England town, the novel brought to light hypocrisies, violence, abuse, repressed desires, and class conflicts hidden behind the respectable facade of provincial life. The book was harshly criticized for its content, which was considered scandalous, but it achieved extraordinary success, selling millions of copies. Despite her success, Grace Metalious's life was marked by personal difficulties, health problems, and alcoholism. She published other novels, including Return to Peyton Place and The Tight White Collar, which continued to explore the dark sides of American society, but they did not match the impact of her debut. She died prematurely at the age of only 39.
