"If this is the best of all possible worlds, what will the others be like?"
Many have been candid without knowing it. And many continue to believe they live in the best of all possible worlds. Even if the reasons to think so seem to be fewer and fewer.
With this moral tale Voltaire took a swipe at the established order, religious fanaticism, intolerance and human greed, because in 1759 the world was a "truly mad and abominable" place. In many ways, it still is. And in others, it is even more so. Candide is a classic to read and rediscover. More modern and subversive than ever, as necessary as ever.
