Start reading
Synopsis

They are cold to the touch and fascinating in their eternal youth. Their laughter seduces, their intelligence enthralls. The answers to the mysteries of life and death lie in their infinitely superior knowledge. They are vampires.

Dr. John Gladstone, a scientist in Victorian London, is thrust into their world after his carriage strikes a young man of angelic beauty, Niccolò. When he abducts Gladstone's daughter and disappears, the doctor must pursue him across Europe, aided by Gladstone's eldest daughter, Ursula, who is fascinated by the allure of eternity, and by Lady Hespeth, whose reserved appearance conceals a dangerous obsession. Why do vampires abduct children? And what is their connection to Gladstone's experiments on a deadly virus?

This, and much more, is "The Delicate Dependence", a masterpiece by Michael Talbot, a cult author who died at the age of only 38.

Author

Michael Talbot was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in
1953. As a young man, he moved to New York, where he began a
freelance writing career, publishing articles in Omni, The Village Voice, and other publications, often exploring the intersection of science and spirituality. His first novel, The Delicate Dependency: A Novel of the Vampire Life, was published as an Avon original paperback in 1982. Although it was out of print for years, it was long considered a classic of the genre and frequently appeared on lists of the best vampire novels ever written; rare and hard-to-find first-edition copies helped cement its reputation. The book was only reprinted in 2023 by Valancourt Books, an independent publisher based in Virginia. Talbot’s other horror titles, both cult classics, are The Bog (1986) and Night Things (1988). Despite the cult success of his fiction, Talbot was best known for his non-fiction, much of which focused
on New Age concepts, mysticism, and the paranormal. His most famous and influential book is probably The Holographic Universe (1991, Italian title: Tutto è uno. L’ipotesi della scienza olografica), which explores the theory that the entire universe is a hologram; the book remains in print and is still widely discussed today. Talbot died of leukemia in 1992 at the age of thirty-eight.
