Creatures that challenged the power of patriarchy

Synopsis

HARPY. MEDUSA. SPHINX. FURY

The mythology of every civilization is full of monsters, represented in female form: these are women who do not respect the rules, angry women, avidly sexual and openly seductive.

Initially conceived as monstrous and deformed creatures, over time they have also become bearers of beauty and wisdom, however enigmatic. But their original sin consists in questioning the value and strength of men, to the point of challenging the great heroes and even threatening History.

In this essay that combines historical and literary criticism with political manifesto and memoir, Jess Zimmerman offers us a lucid and combative analysis of these great monstrosities attributed to women since the dawn of time, represented in eleven legendary beings. To embrace a new image of the female heroine: one who looks very much like a powerful, willful monster.
