Becoming a fascist
How to Give In to Hatred and Fear and Live Happily
Synopsis
The first stage of fascist conversion therapy is to stop thinking too much, to let fear take hold within. Then comes resilience. Renouncing our convictions. At that point—after destroying ourselves from within, just as the far right does to democracy—we will be ready to embrace the new ideology and our new leaders.
Mark Fortier decides to drift away for the sake of survival. He analyzes the myriad ways in which the left has committed political suicide. He examines the rise of carnival-like leaders such as Trump and Milei, and the role of Giorgia Meloni and Italy, the eternal “vanguard” of the “reactionary rear guard.” He studies the death of language and the rise of verbal violence.
"Becoming Fascist" is an ironic and provocative essay on the crisis of the liberal system. It begins with who we are and what we are willing to give up for the common good.
