Latin Lover

Latin like you've never seen it

Synopsis

Latin like you’ve never seen it: POP, IRONY-LADEN, IRRESISTIBLY RELEVANT.

But is it true that the Romans sought advice from the Cumaean Sibyl the way we turn to AI today? That playwrights dissed the powerful like certain rappers? And that in the speeches of politicians back then, just like those of today, there was always some barbarian at the gates? If we are what we are, for better or worse, we owe it to those who built this civilization.

Because, despite two thousand years having passed, Rome continues to speak to us. It does so in Latin, the “dead” language that is more alive than any other. Perhaps we dabbled in it at high school, or maybe we use it in the occasional aphorism to sound sophisticated. Now the time has come to pick it up again, and to do so in a completely new way. And a fun one.

Daniele Michienzi—a teacher and popular science communicator with a highly followed page, Loquendum—takes us on a fascinating journey through declensions and emperors, diphthongs and declarations of war. To discover that Latin is not a relic of the past, but a key to understanding the present.

Latin Lover is a labor of love for a language that never stops living within us and an invitation to look at it with new eyes: because there are no roses without thorns, but none without wonder either.

Author

Daniele Michienzi was born in 1985 and teaches Italian and Latin at a high school in Milan, where he lives. He graduated in Media Languages with a thesis on web communities and in Modern Literature with a thesis on Latin literature. Always passionate about the history of languages and how they work, in 2024 he created Loquendum on Instagram, an educational page where he draws parallels between classical authors and pop culture and tries to highlight the unexpected persistence of the ancient in the contemporary world. He attracted media attention by translating some songs from the Sanremo Music Festival into Latin. On social media, in addition to singing, he often publishes content related to educational innovation and the fight against homophobic and transphobic bullying in schools.
